Heck!

Working again with the ever wonderful Jason Anarchy, I was asked to make another animation. This is for another Kickstarter, a game called Heck!

Have a look at the campaign here and back if you can.

This time I was given a week to complete the animation. This meant I could get my teeth into some real animation work this time.

Created using Adobe Photoshop, After Effects and Premiere Pro.

Newfoundland Jam

I was recently given the opportunity to create a video for the lovely Jason Anarchy and his latest Kickstarter project - Newfoundland Jam (a card game about making friggen’ jam!).

Jason supplied me with the assets and script. My deadline was 48 hours, this is my completed video for the campaign. A lot of work in a short time, but a LOT of fun.

Created in Adobe After Effects & Premiere Pro.

Wrong Turn

Wrong Turn was produced for a group based, university module called Visual FX.  We were asked to make a short film which utilised special effects and Nuke as a compositing tool.  Our group decided to go with my proposal, which was a short ghost story.  We recorded this film in a variety of locations in Edinburgh. We had access to the university’s green screen room, which we filmed in to produce our ghost effect.

A basic rush edit was produced by me, after each filming. These rushes were formed together and refined to allow for the final editing process in Nuke.

The group worked together on the scenes requiring VFX in Nuke to composite the footage together. The completed compositions, were then taken back into Premiere Pro where I edited them together for the final time.

The final part of our VFX group project was to make a behind the scenes video.  The aim was to show the viewer the production processes that we used to create the final film.

The group gathered together various screen shots and footage of their individual production processes, which I edited together using Adobe Premiere Pro.

Shattered

A dark tale of guilt, insomnia, murder & regret.

This stop frame animation is inspired by film noir classic The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and the modern film noir The Machinist.

I was asked to produce an animation based on the concept of environment for a university hand in.  I chose my own home as the environment and used some of my many models and toys as stars in this production.  This is my first attempt at stop frame animation, which was challenging but a lot of fun!  This was produced using Adobe After Effects.

The music used here is Supermarket Goods Escape and Terrorize Local Shoppers and rose to build Harpsichords in their lofts by The Fucked Up Beat.  This track has been used under a creative commons license.  To listen to more of this wonderful music, please visit freemusicarchive.org.

Llama Mall

For a Motion Graphics module, I had to make a title sequence for an imaginary film based on Kinetic Typography (moving text).  I chose to remake the title sequence from Kevin Smith’s Mall Rats, with a little Monty Python inspired twist.

I present - Llama Mall.

None of the llamas shown are my art work, they have been herded from the internet and I thank the original artists for their hard work.  All I have done to the llamas is added some backgrounds to tie them together thematically.

This was produced using Adobe After Effects.

Stick Doll

This was produced for 2D Animation module in university.  We had to find an object in one of the named Edinburgh museums and make an animation about this history of that object.  The history could be real or imagined.

I found an object in the Museum of Childhood that appealed to me. It was a small doll that looked as though it had been made from a stick. This is my imagined back story of the Stick Doll.

I wanted to show the story from the point of view of the doll and the child, so chose to represent this with my shot angles.  I was inspired by cartoons such as Chowder and The Amazing World of Gumball, which both use a mixture of real life and traditional animation to great effect.

The original artefacts were drawn in Photoshop and After Effects was used to animate everything.

I was asked to produce an animatic as part of a university hand in.  An animatic is a basic animated storyboard which is used in animation pre-production to help the animator with timings.  These are my original storyboards for Stick Doll, with the final sound track added.  I took my original storyboards, scanned them and edited them into individual frames using Photoshop.  These frames were then animated together in After Effects.

Scars - The Beauty in Imperfection

This was produced for a module in Digital Video Development that I studied at university.  I was asked to make a 2 minute documentary (2mins 20secs with credits) on any subject. I chose a concept that I had originally thought of as a photography project.

Scars - The Beauty in Imperfection is about allowing people to tell the stories of survival behind the scar, whilst remaining anonymous. I aim to explore the beauty in survival and imperfection.

I wanted to use a macro lens for this project, and with the nature of the close ups, I had to go hand held.  I chose a high contrast black and white colour scheme as I felt this would best match the gritty nature of the project.

The musical score is Ghosts I by Nine Inch Nails, which is available for Creative Commons use.
